Designed on a compact urban plot, this 3 BHK duplex residence demonstrates how spatial planning can create a sense of openness despite limited site dimensions. The design responds directly to the site's constraints, with no setback on the southern edge, resulting in a solid façade without openings to minimize heat gain. Windows are instead strategically positioned on the remaining three sides to maximize daylight, ventilation, and visual connectivity.
The home's defining feature is its split-level planning. The living room is intentionally positioned one level below the kitchen, dining, and service areas, creating a subtle spatial transition while enhancing the volume and character of the shared spaces. This change in level establishes a clear distinction between functions without relying on walls, making the interiors feel more expansive and connected.
A lightweight steel staircase forms the visual centerpiece of the home, linking the living space to the first floor, which accommodates all three bedrooms. Natural light is introduced deep into the house through a skylight above the first-floor landing, transforming the staircase into a bright vertical spine. An additional skylight above the master bathroom further enhances daylight penetration while ensuring privacy and reducing dependence on artificial lighting.
The residence embraces a contemporary architectural language with clean lines, carefully proportioned openings, and a restrained material palette. Every design decision—from orientation and split levels to skylights and controlled fenestration—contributes to creating a comfortable, naturally lit, and energy-conscious home suited to Chennai's tropical climate.
