More than a century after its establishment in 1922, the Lady Willingdon Government Girls Higher Secondary School continues to stand as one of Chennai's significant educational landmarks. This conservation initiative seeks to preserve the architectural and cultural value of the historic campus while ensuring that the building remains functional and safe for future generations. Rather than replacing the original fabric, the project focuses on retaining its authenticity through a sensitive and research-driven restoration process.
The ongoing Phase 01 concentrates on restoring the building's structural integrity and original architectural character. The work includes repairing structural cracks, restoring the traditional Madras roof, conserving historic brick masonry and columns, repairing lime plaster, and refurbishing original timber windows and architectural elements. Every intervention is carried out with the objective of preserving as much of the original material as possible while using techniques and materials compatible with the building's historic construction.
This project extends beyond physical restoration. It represents a long-term commitment to safeguarding an important piece of Chennai's educational heritage. Phase 02 is envisioned as a comprehensive conservation programme aimed at documenting, protecting, and elevating the heritage value of the campus, with the long-term objective of preparing the institution for UNESCO heritage recognition. Supported by the Virtusa Foundation as part of its CSR initiative, the project demonstrates how responsible conservation can preserve history while ensuring the building continues to serve generations of students.
