The Allikulam Pond Rejuvenation project was undertaken to restore an urban waterbody through a comprehensive program of ecological restoration and civil engineering interventions. Beginning with the removal of dense vegetation and invasive species, the project progressed through mechanical dewatering, desilting, bund strengthening, stone pitching, well restoration, and peripheral fencing, transforming a neglected pond into a functional and sustainable water-retention asset.
The restoration process involved systematic excavation and removal of accumulated sludge, strengthening of the pond embankments through engineered earthwork and compaction, followed by dry stone pitching to stabilize the slopes and minimize erosion. Existing infrastructure within the pond, including the central well, was restored with plastering, protective grill works, and surface finishing, while new boundary fencing was introduced to improve long-term protection and accessibility.
While the contractor executed the construction activities, our involvement focused on documenting, evaluating, and presenting the complete transformation of the rejuvenation process through technical site photography, visual documentation, and curated project representation. The project demonstrates how coordinated engineering interventions can revive an existing waterbody, improve stormwater retention, strengthen embankment stability, and create a resilient environmental asset within the urban fabric of Chennai.
